The CNMI has yet to report a single case of Covid-19. And yet our community is already feeling a tight pinch, as the local and global economy has shifted with the effort of trying to contain the spread of this virus.
As tourism has slowed in the CNMI, so have household revenues.
At Karidat we have seen an immediate result: visitors to our Main Office seeking assistance are hitting record rates. The growing number of individuals and families in our community who are facing layoffs or reduced hours is concerning.
On just one day during this past week we served close to 80 individuals—a new high for us—many of whom had received letters from their employers notifying them of reduced work hours. We are keeping very busy trying to keep up with this new demand.
Last week was the soft opening of the new Karidat Thrift Shop and soon it will be operating on a regular schedule. Volunteers for the new Thrift Shop and food pantry are needed.
If you are not facing a reduction in work hours and/or salary and are able to share with those who are, please consider donating:
– non-perishable food items (such as rice, canned goods, pasta…),
– gently-used clothing
– shoes
– household items
– your time as a volunteer
And as always, please remember Karidat and most especially the people served here in the Diocese of Chalan Kanoa, in your prayers. May God preserve and protect everyone.
