SIDE EFECTS OF PRAYER

A story is told about a patient who after coming out of the doctor’s clinic was seen cutting off the edge of the pill. When asked why he’s doing it, he said he’s taking away the side effects.

Jesus said to the Twelve, do you also want to leave? Simon Peter answered him, “ Master, to whom shall we go! You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God.” (John 6:67-69).

We hear boisterous and confusing voices around. We need to listen to Jesus’ gentle words in the gospels.  He said, “ I am the good shepherd. I know my sheep and my sheep know me. Just as the Father knows me and I know the Father, and lay down my life for the sheep.” ( John 10: 14-16).

A friend is undergoing chemotherapy and he mentioned some side effects like; dryness of the skin, occasional vomiting, loss of appetite to eat, loss of weight, lack of sleep and more. But he told about another kind of therapy he learned and calls called , “ Prayer Therapy.” That means; I pray for you, you pray for me and let’s pray for one another.

Prayer is the best medicine. When you pray, you’re talking to someone who can heal you, strengthen and comfort you. He is the Lord.

Many people undermine prayer, set it aside and pray only when needed or in trouble. For them, pressing appointments are more important. There are those who pursue lofty ambition only to end up empty and vain. They neglect the Giver of gifts, true peace and happiness.

Here are some side effects and symptoms of “ Prayer Therapy”: An increased tendency to attend  Mass and receive holy communion; frequent attacks of jolly mood, smiles and kind thoughts; episodes of recognizing and praising one’s good performance, success and milestones; loss of sight to see the negative side of people, loss of mood to criticize, despise and brag oneself; loss of appetite to  speak ill of one’s neighbor, and be showy; increased urge to offer awards and rewards for good works; blurring vision to see only the mistakes of others and gaining ability to be merciful and forgive. If symptoms persist, get down to your knees and thank God for these beautiful side effects of prayer. What’s the best appointment for you to do everyday? An appointment with God in prayer!

On the flip side, someone said that we enjoy life today, yesterday is gone and tomorrow may never come. Humility is a strange thing. The minute you think you’ve got it, you’ve lost it. Humble yourself therefore under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time He may exult you. (1 Peter 5:6). Create life that feels good on the inside, not one that just looks good on the outside. Tears are words that hearts cannot say. If it matters to you, it hurts, otherwise it doesn’t. Amen on that folks!!

St. Faustina wrote Jesus’ words; “ I find pleasure not in large buildings and magnificent structures, but in a pure and humble heart.” ( Diary 532).
