What makes you afraid?

Every time I hear the word “beach,” there is some kind of uneasiness in me. The moment I plunge into the water, fear would creep in. It was probably because of my traumatic experience when I almost drowned. Trapped in the ocean, I was struggling with the big waves helplessly. I thought it was the end of my life.

“Lord, save me.” That was my prayer which I kept on repeating…until eventually, the waves calmed down. Thanks be to God! I was able to reach the shore – safely, after what seemed like an eternity of struggles. After that incident, I told myself that I would NOT go to the beach anymore. Those words registered into my mind.

But one day, Bishop Ryan Jimenez of the Diocese of Chalan Kanoa told the Clergy that there was an invitation for the “Swim for Faith” offered for all pastors and church ministers here in the island of Saipan. At first – at the back of my mind, I was reluctant to join in this kind of activity, but out of obedience, I have to follow.

Thanks to the Swim for Faith pilot program: Sis. Emma and Bro. Peter Perez and to the rest of the organizers. After those weeks of swimming lessons, the fear in me gradually changed into positive thoughts. Every time the instructors tell us to do the various movements or techniques, I always think that Jesus also goes down with me in the water, holding my hands and calming my disturbed mind…”My son, you can do it. Swim with me. Don’t be afraid. I am here to watch over you…” Those thoughts started to sink into my mind.

At the last day of the Swim for Faith pilot program, I received an award: Most Improved Swimmer. It was really a surprise not only for me but maybe to some as well. I was pondering why among the participants, I was the one who received this. I was thinking that this award should be given to the one who has really shown his best.

For me, it is not important whether I am the best or not, what is important is I was able to face my fear. I did not give up. I swam with Christ and I will continue to swim with Him who guides and strengthens me along the course of my journey…

I swim for faith, I will swim with faith.
