World Marriage Day Mass

The Parish of San Jose, Tinian is sponsoring a “World Marriage Day Mass” on February 9, 2020 at 8 a.m. at San Jose Parish Church.  The purpose of the Mass is to recognize the Sacramentally married couples who are from Tinian or currently call Tinian as their home.  The Marriage and Family Life Team, with their Pastor, Father Anthony Aguason, is planning a wonderful ceremony with the renewal of vows for all the couples present and a brief merenda after the Mass.

The history of “World Marriage Day” is as follows: (from the website of World Marriage Encounter) WHAT IS WORLD MARRIAGE DAY? World Marriage Day (WMD) honors husband and wife as the foundation of the family, the basic unit of society. It salutes the beauty of their faithfulness, sacrifice and joy in daily married life.

The idea of celebrating marriage began in Baton Rouge, La., in 1981, when couples encouraged the Mayor, the Governor and the Bishop to proclaim St. Valentines’ Day as “We Believe in Marriage Day”. The event was so successful, the idea was presented to and was adopted by Worldwide Marriage Encounter’s National Leadership.

By 1982, 43 Governors officially proclaimed the day and celebrations spread to U.S. military bases in several foreign countries. In 1983, the name was changed to “World Marriage Day”, designated to be celebrated each year on the second Sunday in February. In 1993, his Holiness, Pope John Paul II, imparted his Apostolic Blessings on World Marriage Day. WMD celebrations continue to grow and spread to more countries and faith expressions every year.

Father Anthony wrote this as part of a letter given out to all the Sacramentally married couples on the island, “With this, we are happy to invite you to a “World Marriage Day Mass”, on February 9, 2020 at 8 a.m. at San Jose Parish Church. We thank you for having chosen to be Sacramentally married in the Church. Your faithfulness is truly a blessing in our parish community and an outstanding example on how our Catholic brethren should opt to live their lives should they choose to live as husbands and wives.”

The Tinian Marriage and Family Life Team invites all our family and friends to join us on this occasion.  For those who are residing on Saipan, Rota or Guam and will be able to join us, please contact one of the team members so we can acknowledge you on this day.
