For this week’s column I asked my colleagues the question: Why do you work at Karidat? Why work here when you might just as well work somewhere else?
The following is a selection from their answers.
“It’s because even if you cannot really help somebody very much, at least by just trying you get this feeling of being really fulfilled.”
“ I wasn’t even thinking of doing a job like this, but then I saw the posting in the paper so I applied. I went in without even knowing the job description but when I started, the staff was so open and friendly and told me everything I needed to know to learn on the job. I was surprised but it just ended up being a really good fit for me.”
“Where else would I work? This is the best work environment I have ever found! I love my coworkers.”
“I like that it’s not such a strict work environment and I like the colleagues and that I work independently in my own space. I don’t find it stressful, just busy. And I guess like that it is a challenge as well.”
“I choose to work here because I believe this is the place where I can be an effective helper for the community through service, so that my children will raise their children here, and their children.”
“I didn’t know that much about Karidat when I applied for the job but I liked the idea of being able to help people who come for assistance, and especially to hear the stories of abused women. “
“Sometimes I have to turn off my brain when I go home and I compartmentalize the emotions. I go to the gym where I go for a run and that helps. But we have to try to help people. We are just here to try.”
“Even if I didn’t work here I would still be trying to help people so why wouldn’t I go to a job where I can do that every day?”
“Actually, I really like my office space! Just kidding. In all seriousness, I think this quote really sums it up: “Be the reason someone smiles today.” That’s what this is all about.
“Because this is home.”
