If there is one topic that Pope Francis never tires of, it is love of neighbor. His message on this year’s World Day of the Poor was a reminder that the poor are the treasure of the Church.
Here are a few of his often-repeated tips, to “self-check” to assess whether we are just using the label of Christian, or also truly living and acting in a way worthy of that name.
- Do I spend my time, and not just my money, to help alleviate the material sufferings of others?
- Am I annoyed by the presence of the poor and irritated when someone needs something from me, or do I welcome them as brothers and sisters?
- Am I as generous in extending mercy to others as Christ has been to me?
- Am I consumed with a desire to acquire money? Fame? Power? Am I rich in love toward others?
- Do I indulge in gossip and thereby murder my neighbor’s character?
- Do I, as a Christian, have at least one poor person as a friend?
- Am I bitter, resentful, or angry? Or do I trust Christ’s promises to restore all things?
- Do I “give up” on others or do I extend forgiveness again, and again (and again)?
- Do I help others without expecting to receive anything in return?
Do not be discouraged if you don’t “pass the test” but humbly ask for the Lord’s help and to trust that He will help us reach our goals and dreams of becoming more and more Christlike.
