MT. CARMEL Class of 1968 Chairperson Rita Cabrera Guerrero announces that the class is preparing to celebrate the 50th anniversary of their graduation from their Alma Mater.
The Golden Jubilee Celebration is scheduled for June 3, the day of their graduation, with a Thanksgiving Mass by His Excellency Bishop Ryan A. Jimenez, at Mt. Carmel Cathedral, at 9:00 a.m.
1968 is a year that many of us still recall. It was the year when one of the most powerful typhoons struck Saipan. Despite the total destruction Super Typhoon Jean brought on the Mt. Carmel campus in April of 1968, the students were able to complete their class requirements under very challenging circumstances. There were no classrooms, books and other instructional materials, water and power for several months. The community, especially the parents, helped to rebuild the school while the dedicated Mercedarian nuns, peace corps volunteers and the priests tried to sustain the academic pace for the students to graduate on time. The class 1968 Yearbook depict the typhoon damages alongside the photos of the graduates and undergraduates.
Some members of the class visited with the graduating seniors in April of this year to share their experiences during and after their years at Mt. Carmel, and, more importantly to provide words of encouragement and support to the students as they prepare to pursue their individual dreams in life.
Over the years, the Class of 1968 embarked on several projects to help their Alma Mater such as reconstruction, fencing and landscaping of the Grotto Shrine on October, 1997; four years of Our Lady of Grace scholarships to deserving seniors and eight graders.
For Year 2018, the class will help install the lighting for the shrine of our Blessed Mother which is situated by the Administration Building for the youth basketball, ballet classes, and other events held in the evenings.
The entire Mount Carmel family is invited to join the Eucharistic Celebration scheduled for June 3, 2018. Updates for this event will be announced in the near future. For more information, please contact Mrs. Rita Guerrero at ritacguerrero@gmail.com or call 989-0827.
