Mount Carmel School’s Theatre Club kicked off its 2018-2019 performance season with auditions for its next big musical, Tasi. Held last week, the auditions brought in the largest group of aspiring dramatists ever in the school’s history, with 129 students from grades 1 through 12 auditioning. The show will also be a part of the club’s year-long focus on island stories, with a mission to “celebrate our island stares on stage and in film.”

Inspired by Disney’s Moana, Tasi is an original story written by club adviser and school president, Galvin Deleon Guerrero. The story follows Tasi as she struggles between family expectations, traditions, and her own aspirations. The production will also feature music from and about the islands.

Tasi will be directed by Kalea Borja, who was the assistant director for last year’s hit production of Disney’s Mulan Jr. When asked why she stepped up to direct Tasi, Borja said, “I believe that we need to promote our local culture and embrace it, and surely Tasi is the play that can do just that!”

Despite her enthusiasm, Borja was surprised by the record number of students who auditioned. “Never did I expect the number of students who were excited to audition for Tasi. There was so much talent in the room that I was overjoyed as well as overwhelmed.” She added, “The auditions, all in all, went well and I am excited to see students wanting to be part of this local production.”

The show’s assistant director and club veteran, Brandee Hunter, is also very excited about the show. “So far, being an assistant director has been one of my favorite roles in a theatre production.” Hunter has acted in numerous past productions and has also served on the crew.

Looking ahead, Hunter said, “I feel nervous and excited at the same time for this show.” She added, “This play will be one of the best productions that the Theatre Club has ever done.”

Tasi is scheduled for performances on November 30 and December 1. Details about times, venue, and ticket prices will be announced next month.
