Fourteen high school students were inducted into Mount Carmel School’s Sacred Heart Chapter of the National Honor Society in a ceremony held on Friday, March 11, 2022, at Mount Carmel Cathedral.

The ceremony was led by Bishop Ryan P. Jimenez, school administrators, and society officers.

The inductees were selected by a faculty council that reviewed applications from sophomores and upperclassmen who had maintained a grade point average of 3.0 and had demonstrated how they had fulfilled the society’s values of scholarship, service, leadership, and character.

This year’s inductees are Natalie Gabrielle E. Ano, Erin Frink, Ruben Guerrero, Eunkyu (Joey) Hong, Brandon Lee, Jazmyn Phoeme Lopez, Devin Jordan Manglona Propst, Earle Gabreil San Nicolas, Jonathan Y. Sheu, Tyana Kisha Tesiro, Leyonne Alfred F. Tolentino, Avah Marie Torres, Kristan Rose Torres, and Jedric Nathaniel Villar.

The keynote speaker for the ceremony was AlumKnight Mr. Zeno Deleon Guerrero, otherwise known as “Mr. Z”, who also serves as a recent faculty member teaching English and Literature.

In his speech, Mr. Z spoke about the difference between how honor is typically perceived and what being honorable truly means, “ And so for you NHS inductees and current members, do not be guided by a GPA value or the number of clubs or leadership positions on your resume. Be guided by treating yourself and others with the dignity and kindness you each deserve as human beings. Open your eyes, ears, and hearts to your MCS and Saipan community – we need you. Speak up and ask the tough questions. And by embracing that humanity within all of us, I am confident that you will bring honor to us all.”

In her opening remarks, acting president, Ms. Frances Taimanao, thanked parents for supporting their children and congratulated the students for their accomplishments. She also reminded the new inductees that being in the NHS goes beyond academics and prestige, “NHS members not only excel in academics but also volunteer in their communities and make connections within the community a priority…Ultimately, it’s a symbol of your hard work. It’s a place to make connections. And it’s a launching pad for the next phase of your life. Congratulations to you, new members of the National Honor Society, and congratulations parents and guardians for always guiding and supporting them throughout their journey.”

Established in 1921, the National Honor Society is the nation’s premier organization that recognizes outstanding high school students, with more than one million student members who demonstrate the society’s trademark values of scholarship, leadership, service, and character. Mount Carmel School’s Sacred Heart Chapter of the NHS was opened in 1997. (PR)
