This year, Mount Carmel School Knights are reinforcing their commitment to the environment with a new Eco Club. The club is partnering with business supporters and holding several events to improve the environment.

The Eco Club is advised by veteran science teacher and former teacher of the year, Luz Baldazo, who recently connected with the E-Land Group as part of its environmental outreach program. E-Land runs Kensington Hotel and Coral Ocean Point and recently paid a visit to the school.

E-Land’s Eunji Ahn was very happy to work with the school and its students. As Ahn put it, “The E-Land Group is deeply interested in youth alliance activities. We want to see more of the youth develop and participate in activities that will support our beautiful island and increase awareness.”

E-Land Group representatives recently met with Mount Carmel School’s Eco Club as the club worked on the school’s garden.

For Baldazo, E-Land’s support is helping move the Eco Club’s projects along. “The school already has a garden, but it hasn’t been touched in a long time. Then E-Land reached out to us, offering to sponsor any projects that would benefit our environment and community. So, we started fixing the garden.”

However, while E-Land agreed to support the redevelopment of the school garden, Baldazo wanted students to also take ownership of the project. As she put it, “I wanted students to help so that they are exposed to projects that not only helps the school, but also the environment.”

In addition to the garden, the Eco Club is sponsoring several competitions, including a flyer contest for 3rd through 6th grade students, a brochure contest for 7th through 12th grade students, and a monthly plastic bottle competition.
