Last week, we shared the overview of the recently approved Guidelines for the Celebration of Matrimony here in our Diocese. This week we will focus on the major changes in the celebration of Matrimony in the Diocese of Chalan Kanoa. Again, we must be reminded that these liturgical guidelines are intended to serve as a pastoral aide to our clergy and other individuals who are involved in the planning and celebration of weddings in our Diocese.
So, what are these changes?
- What used to be called “Rite of Marriage” now is properly called the “Order of Celebrating Matrimony”.
- The PENITENTIAL ACT is omitted.
- GLORIA is sung regardless of the season but never used at wedding ceremony outside Mass.
- In the CONSENT, there are minor modifications in the wording of the questions and the consent.
- There is an option for the assembly to sing “a hymn or canticle of praise” after the blessing and giving of rings.
- Normally, the Unity Candle is lit after the wedding rites. The unity candle is still NOT APPROVED for use at wedding liturgies. It is recommended that the Unity Candle may be lit at the reception before the “Grace before Meals.”
- During the SIGN OF PEACE, in order to maintain the solemnity of the celebration, the couple is advised to remain in their place while giving the sign of peace.
- The “Order of Celebrating Matrimony” encourages the reception of Communion under both species, especially by the bride and groom, their parents, witnesses and relatives.
- The Holy Bible and the Statue of the Holy Family normally is brought in as part of the Offertory Procession. In order to keep the general purpose of presentation of gifts during Offertory (for the church), it is strongly encouraged that the Holy Bible and Statue of the Holy Family be placed somewhere in the Sanctuary (away from the altar) before mass.
- Signing of Marriage License – It has been the practice that the couple and witnesses are called up to the altar to sign the document. The signing may take place in the sacristy or at a prepared table in the Sanctuary in the presence of the people; however, it is NOT done at the altar.
Thank you and May God Bless Us All.
