First Four Missionary Foundations

After centuries of patient waiting, listening in prayer, the nuns of Berriz (est. 1540) were ready when God gifted them with a missionary call within their call to religious life.

Through his servant, Margarita Maria Maturana the sisters were sent to:

First: Wuhu, China

Departed: September 19, 1926

Arrived: November 5, 1926

Second: Saipan, Mariana islands

Departed: October 30, 1927

Arrived: March 4, 1928

Third: Tokyo, Japan

Departed: August 5, 1928

Arrived: September 23, 1928

Fourth: Ponape [Pohnpei] Caroline islands

Departed: August 5, 1928

Arrived: November 11, 1928

Their mission: to respond to the needs, many and varied in each place, of education and faith forma- tion through the WITNESS of their lives, SERVICE to the people and PROCLAMATION of the Gospel—the Good News of Jesus. The Institute of the Mercedarian Missionaries of Berriz was born.
