ESKUELAN San Francisco de Borja students were in Guam for the 39th Annual Island Wide Science Fair held at the university of Guam on May 13, 2017.
Approximately 500 students from Kinder to 12th grades representing various schools in Guam and Commonwealth of the northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) showcased their projects on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
Science coordinator and teacher Mary Rose Lucero, who oversaw the students, said “Each student that attended the fair was already a winner.”
Lucero added, “Our students competed against other bright minds. At the end, one of our students placed 3rd in Human/Medical category Division 1”
First grader Eianne Miel M. Ladao brought her winning school level and CNMI science project “Is 5 Seconds Rule For Real” to Guam to compete amongst the best and brightest.
Eianne’s experiment explored that it is not safe to eat food that you dropped on the floor, no matter how clean the floor is. It would be better to throw it away because bacteria and germs are already on it.
“Some kids my age will blow or wipe the food they drop and eat it. My parents never allowed me to eat anything that I dropped,” said 6 year old Eianne. “now, I understand why because I did my investigation and experiment.”
“I’m amazed and proud of Eianne. A very quiet student but she prepared herself in learning the subject of the hypothesis that she was developing and the process that she went through to either prove or dis- prove what her hypothesis was, how she documented it, and her display,” said administrator/principal Carmen H. Atalig.
“Awesome work Eianne, Edward III, and Michael Jon,” added Atalig.
Eianne was joined by her fellow schoolmates Michael Jon Cantil who along with Eianne is representing the CNMI. Edward U. Maratita III represented the school and the Luta community.
“A great reflection on the quality of work our teachers put in for our students whom they explain things thoroughly and is always there for them when they need help,” said science and class adviser Edward Maratita, Jr. “The science fair gives them a chance to present and gets them ready for new heights in science. Just being in the science fair makes the students feel accomplished.”
The administration and faculty would like to extend their appreciation to the parents and the CNMI Public School System. Thank you, Un Sen Dangkulo Na Si Yu’us Ma’ase, Olommway, and Maraming Salamat Po!
