Better Catholics – Ep. 4: Social Action

What does social action of the church look like?

Let Sr. Martha Ramarui, MMB share with you some of her experiences ministering to those in need in the CNMI.  Notice the passion she has for this church ministry and feel the joy that it gives to her, even after more than 43 years of service to the community.  She, and her fellow Mercedarian Sisters, embody the true meaning of how to be a disciple of Christ.

“…Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ (Mat 25:40)

But, really, the church’s role in terms of social action is 2-pronged:  Advocacy and Direct Service.  The first is practiced through preaching and evangelization while the second one is done just like how Sr. Martha does it – by reaching out to the people in our community.  Social action response need not be an organized and advertised event.  We just have to be aware of the many opportunities for giving and then act on it.  As Sr. Martha succinctly puts it: “Occasions (to give) come.  You just have to be alert, open your eyes, your heart, and allow your feelings to lead you.”
