A HEART TO LOVE

Mother Margarita searched to know God’s Will and the way in which He desired her to share His love. She came to see that there is nothing less than to affirm God’s love with our lives. She wanted to be a sign; to be a messenger of God’s love. She said: “To be a missionary is to reveal to the world there is a God who loves us.” That being said, she proclaimed God with her life.

Filled with missionary zeal, she exclaimed: “The love of God has taken over my heart, and I know He wants to completely transform it.” This heart to share God’s love transformed the work of Mother Margarita to a universal heart based on the unconditional love of Jesus Christ for even the poorest and most insignificant. She said she had the desire to love Christ in a new way. She wanted to use her entire life to glorify Him, just as He glorified the Father. But she also said that Christ clearly showed her that He wanted her desires to become action.

Mother Margarita often read the writings of Saint John of the Cross, and said she gained much strength to identify herself with Christ through his writings. The particular verse that she said calmed all her fears and allowed her to clearly see the Will of God was this one:

“In search of my love / I will go over mountains and strands;/ I will gather no flowers/ I will fear no wild beasts;/ And pass by the mighty and frontiers.”

When she spoke to her sisters about the Missions in Micronesia she said, “You will work so Jesus will reign in the hearts of these simple islanders. Talk to them about simple yet solid things; think what Jesus would tell them if He were here. But above all, love them very much; love teaches more than all the books and sermons put together.”

Mother Margarita wanted nothing less than love in action. She desired that her community of sisters love God so ardently that everyone would see Jesus radiating in them. This was the beautiful missionary life she envisioned. She knew a personal experience of God was so essential to be a fruitful missionary. To speak of God is one thing; to take on the wings of an angel and go anywhere God calls you to share His love; that love is quite different.

Love can be found in so many ways, but Mother Margarita said she only knew how to love “by asking God for His Love, by covering herself with Christ. . . ” In addition to showing that love in action, Mother Margarita desired to love Jesus for those who did not know or love Him. She asked Jesus to give her a new heart, so that she could love Him as He deserved. She wanted her life to be a continuous prayer, so that she could carry the light of Christ to the far corners of the earth. Though she did not know how she would accomplish this, she did say that “with humble and trusting prayer, united with Christ, she could accomplish anything.” Mother Margarita’s life and her thoughts about love, invite us to look at the source of love in our lives. What is the message we give others with our lives? How do we announce the Love of God? The answer is really simple, so close, and yet often elusive. As Mother Margarita puts it so simply, “The Love of God is the only force capable of moving our heart.”
